The Journey

I first heard Prelude in A minor when I was in college. For obvious reasons, this piece struck me immediately. After studying a little jazz, it became apparent that this was one of the sources for early jazz harmony. Not only that, the harmony is still very modern in many ways.

I recorded this video during Covid, and realized very quickly that the trickiest part about it was its multi-voice composition.

It is easy to figure out harmonies on guitar… for the most part. But when I tried to capture the relationship between the multi range melodies, it became much more difficult to decipher.

This transcription is just an attempt at this concept. Thankfully, it lays itself out very well for guitar (thankfully its in a minor!).
